Illinois small business development, Illinois small business lawyerWhen you start or run a small business, you may have several logistical concerns. Some may be best dealt with by seeking the advice and assistance of a business law attorney. However, there will be times when it is appropriate to reach out to community resources specifically designed to assist small business owners. One such resource is the Illinois Small Business Development Center, which recently named a new director.

What is the Illinois Small Business Development Center?

There are many Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) across the state of Illinois. These offices are designed to provide information, training, and other resources to both start-ups and already existing small businesses. In our area there are two locations in Chicago and two in Lisle. There are also other suburban locations in areas like Joliet, Elgin and Aurora. While different centers provide different services, in general they provide the following:

  • Small-business advising and management help;

  • Help developing business plans;

  • Assistance with developing marketing plans;

  • Information on accessing financing programs;

  • Help with financial planning;

  • Business education and training; and

  • Other specialized services in areas like technology and innovation.

SBDC Online Learning Center

In addition to providing local offices for assistance, SBDC also provides an online “eLearning Center.” This resource provides online classes in various relevant business topics. Some of the courses are available for free. Free courses include topics such as accounting, communications, business ethics, leadership skills, and human resources issues. More advanced courses may require a membership fee of either $25 or $10 per month, depending on exactly what the business owner wants to access.

Who is the New Director?

The News-Gazette reports that Don Elmore has been named the new director of the Champaign-Area Illinois Small Business Development Center. He will take over on March 2, 2015. He is a co-owner of a bookstore in downtown Champaign, and has marketing and technology experience with other area small businesses. Roughly 70 percent of his new job will consist of advising small business owners on their startups and expansions and connecting those owners with professional services related to business development. If your Chicagoland business is considering an expansion into the Champaign area, he may be an excellent resource.
