The Lake County CBDC program will focus on providing small construction businesses, particularly those led by minorities and women, with the support and assistance required to successfully bid on upcoming Illinois Tollway construction projects.

The ultimate goal of this new partnership is to provide small businesses with flexible and customized technical assistance and training necessary to successfully bid on the many upcoming Illinois Tollway constructions projects. Part of the “Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future” program, this project is a 15-year, $12 billion capital program aimed at creating a new and cutting edge Illinois Tollway.

Additionally, this program will require bid submissions from construction companies. The goal of adding the CLC is to ensure that underrepresented and diverse small businesses have a decent shot at participating in the various road construction projects that will be required to build the new Illinois Tollway.

The funding for the new CBDC location comes from the approval of a $245,296 agreement with the Illinois Tollway Committee and also from the $578,000 annual financial commitment made by the Illinois Community College Board. Through this agreement the new CBDC location in Lake County will have guaranteed funding through March 2016. The CBDC’s activities are made possible through the leadership of Chicago Heights’ Prairie State College, as well as through partnerships with the Moraine Valley Community College of Palos Hills and South Holland’s South Suburban College.

The new WPDI Lake County location will focus on providing cutting-edge courses, consulting, and training that focuses on the six following areas: Client Solutions, Continuing Professional Development, Construction Business Development, International Trade, Small Business Development and Personal Enrichment.

At the CLC, small businesses operating in the construction industry will be provided one-on-one support from business advisers and other parties. By providing services and support to small businesses led by minorities and women eager to obtain road construction contracts for the upcoming Illinois Tollway construction, the CLC will be assisting Illinois by creating new jobs and facilitating broader economic growth and equality. It is common knowledge that the construction industry is a boys club, typically led by males and big corporations. However, the CLC will be able to help change the landscape of Illinois’ current construction industry by providing small businesses with the knowledge and skills that they require to be successful in the construction industry.
